Tuckerton Urges Residents to Prevent Pipes From Freezing

Dec 07, 2018

A cold snap Thanksgiving night found Tuckerton public works crews struggling to shut off water at two vacation houses in Tuckerton Beach, where owners had yet to turn off the water and pipes had burst.

During the Dec. 3 municipal meeting, Borough Council President Sam Colangelo said residents had been lulled into a sense of security because of warm temperatures this fall, but freezing temps were in the forecast.

“If you see water running on someone’s property, contact the water and sewer department at 609-296-9222 during business hours. And after hours, call the police dispatch at 609-296-9416, or your local council members.”

In other business, the council awarded the first contract for 2019 to Earle Asphalt for emergency water and sewer repairs. The contract is necessary because Tuckerton doesn’t have all the equipment that is available at a large construction company like Earle. The bidding process was based on estimated scenarios that include man-hours, equipment rentals and types of emergency contingencies. Earle’s bid of $97,902 was the lowest responsible bid based on the theoretical bid specs, explained Borough Administrator Jenny Gleghorn. The town is not paying out this figure.

Two Tuckerton residents received honors in November. Pride and Celebrations Committee chairwoman Joanne McAndrew was feted at an Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office luncheon on Nov. 15. She was given the Ocean County Community Partnership Award by Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer for “all your efforts on behalf of all the citizens of Ocean County.”

McAndrew has worked with the prosecutor’s office for drug awareness and prevention for five years.

Colangelo was recently inducted into his North Hartford High School Athletic Hall of Fame for his work as swimming and diving coach from 1978 to 2002, when he retired. His team, the Hawks, finished in the top three nearly every year, and several athletes were Baltimore County champs.
