Two Bus Tours of Historic Beach Haven Planned

Jul 03, 2017

A monthly bus tour of Historic Beach Haven, led by borough historian Jeanette Lloyd, will offer interested residents and visitors a glimpse into the area’s rich past. Tours will take place on Wednesdays, July 12 and Aug. 16, at 10 a.m. Participants will board the bus at the LBI Historical Association museum on Engleside Avenue.

The historic district is 30 square blocks, covering from Bay Avenue (not including the commercial lots) to Atlantic Avenue and from Chatsworth Avenue to Fifth Street. The boundaries were defined by the state and needed federal approval, said Lloyd.

The tour has 24 regular stops that are accompanied by historic photographs.

“When I stop at a site, I show a photograph of what the area or a particular building looked like 100 years ago or so,” she said.

Lloyd said the trip normally lasts just over an hour, depending on how many questions are asked.

“It’s a fun, interactive tour,” she said.

Lloyd said that unlike previous years, the tour will now use a shuttle bus from Long Beach Township. As a result, seating is much more limited.

“We can only fit 14,” she said. “But unlike past summers, they will be riding in air-conditioned comfort. It got pretty hot inside those school buses from the Beach Haven School.”

Tickets at $25 per person must be purchased in advance at the museum, which is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Only cash and checks are accepted.
