Two New Police Officers Hired in Beach Haven

May 10, 2017

Beach Haven’s second female full-time police officer was sworn in to duty at the May 8 borough council meeting in front of a room full of family and well-wishers.

The hiring of Ashley H. Stahl and Stephen Purtell gives the department 12 full-time officers. They replaced Sgts. Sean McCaffrey and Robert Close, who recently retired. Beach Haven’s first female officer is current Sgt. Lisa Schmied.

“The new officers are great kids and they’ll be a tremendous asset,” said Police Chief Kevin Kohler.

Stahl, 22, and Purtell, 21, are both graduates of Lacey Township High School. They have completed training at the Ocean County Police Academy.

“For me this will be a great way to serve the public,” said Stahl. “There certainly is going to be adrenalin rush with this job.”

Her mother, Pam Stahl, said her interest in becoming an officer grew out of her serving with the Beach Haven First Aid Squad as an EMT.

“She wanted to take service to the next level,” Pam Stahl said. “We’re so proud of her.”

Purtell, who is an EMT with the Lacey First Aid Squad, said being an officer was “a lifelong ambition.”

“I know that he will put all his heart and soul into being an officer,” said his father, Tom Purtell. “He will be very dedicated.” E.E.
