Barnegat Leader Spring Sports Preview

Underclassmen Will Determine Barnegat Baseball’s Fortunes

Apr 20, 2018

As of April 16, the Barnegat Boys varsity baseball team sported a 2-5 record (2-2 in the Shore Conference B-South division. The Bengals are four years removed from the playing in the NJSIAA Group 2 state championship game.

“All the key players from that team have graduated, so we’ve had to rebuild a little with younger players,” said head coach Dan McCoy.

McCoy said he has been pleasantly surprised with his third baseman, David MacGillivray, who has made a name for himself in scholastic bowling, having been named recently to the first team All-State Group 2.

“He’s hitting .435 with two home runs,” said McCoy. “He showed up for spring tryouts. Baseball-wise, I didn’t know anything about him.”

Starters include junior left fielder Brian Finucan, who batted .329 last season; sophomore second baseman  Lucas Torres, who hit .254, with 13 stolen bases; junior pitcher Tyler Suydam, who went 3-2 with a 3.47 ERA; senior pitcher Liam Corbett, who was 2-2 with a 2.96 ERA; senior pitcher Ryan Bush, 0-3 with a 4.82 ERA; and sophomore catcher Luke Bush.

Aside from MacGillivray, other newcomers are junior infielder Joe Coleman, junior pitcher Dexter Dambroski, senior first baseman Ethan Fox, junior outfielder Liam Lynch-Bell, freshman pitcher Nicholas Danbrowney, junior infielder Kenny McKeon and sophomore infielder Matt Scott.

After McGillivray’s .435, there’s quite a drop-off as the next best batting average is Finucan’s .259. He has the team’s other home run.

On the mound, Dambroski has looked strong with a 1.71 ERA over three starts.

The Bengals’ two wins this year were against Donovan Catholic and Lakewood.

“We’re a team that hardly has any seniors, so we’ll be relying on the younger guys to adapt to playing on the varsity level,” McCoy said.

The Bengals’ next game is at home against Steinert at 1 p.m. on April 21. They also have a home game Monday, April 23, at 3:45 p.m. with Jackson Liberty.
