Uneven Access

Jul 11, 2018

To the Editor:

I read Linda Armston’s letter (“Still Inaccessible,” 7/4) and couldn’t agree more about beach access and parking. For years, Surf City has been the beach that my wife and I have enjoyed. Access is not always easy, but it is better than most of the other beaches on the Island, and town employees have always been very helpful.

Parking is always at a premium and handicap spaces are no exception. At the Surf City taxpayers meeting I asked the mayor about painting the parking spaces and maybe adding more. He said he will look into it.

What would really be helpful would be some type of walkway on the sand to get closer to the beach. The Sand Bar in Beach Haven uses a blue mesh to cross part of the dune and this works very well.

The beach is a beautiful place to go and enjoy for everyone. The next time you’re pulling your beach cart across 100 feet of sand realize that there are additional challenges in getting on the beach for people with mobility issues.
