Weekend Storm Closes Little Egg Harbor Community Center

May 15, 2017

When it rained 3 inches in a short period of time on Saturday, the roof of the Little Egg Harbor Community Center could stand it no more. During the May 13 indoor community flea market, a ceiling tile became soaked and dropped to the floor below, striking a woman.

According to Little Egg Harbor Police Information Officer Troy Bezak, the Great Bay Regional EMS and the Mystic Island Volunteer Fire Co. responded to the scene, but no one was hurt.

Because water could have leaked into an electric panel, the center has been closed indefinitely, said a township representative on Monday.

Organizations and activities scheduled for the center are in the process of finding new venues.

The township had reopened the center just two years ago after making extensive repairs to the building after Superstorm Sandy’s storm surge pushed 4 feet of sea water inside.

In March, the township applied for a $30,000 Community Development Block Grant from Ocean County to put a new roof on the building. —P.J.
