Well-Kept Secret

Nov 21, 2018

To the Editor:

According to state Senate President Steven Sweeney, the state Legislature will vote to legalize marijuana for recreational purposes in the very near future. The impact of this on our community is just starting to be learned.

We’ve seen the negative effects of property values in Colorado when marijuana dispensaries are placed in neighborhoods and it could very well happen here in Little Egg Harbor. New Jersey’s recreational marijuana bill has no cap on the number of dispensary licenses that could be issued.

With that being said and while no one was looking last May, the township had a decision to make: Would the town pass a resolution or an ordinance relating to this politically sensitive issue. It should be noted that a municipal ordinance differs from a resolution. An ordinance is a legislative act that is a local law. A resolution is a nonbinding expression of opinion. Not listed as an agenda item on May 10, the township passed 2018-126, which reads in part: “Resolution of the Township of Little Egg Harbor, County of Ocean, State of New Jersey hereby opposing the enactment of legislation to legalize the recreational use and sale of marijuana.”

This politically sensitive issue received little or no attention from any publication and still today remains a well-kept secret.
