Women’s Health Night Is Oct. 23 at Southern Ocean Medical Center

Oct 17, 2013

Women of Southern Ocean County, Wednesday, Oct. 23 is a night to put yourself first. Nothing is as caring to your family and community as taking care of you. Southern Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin invites you to its 22nd annual Women’s Health Night from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the first floor of the hospital.

If you have never been, then be prepared to be surprised: The hospital is offering free health screenings, literature, educational seminars and the opportunity to meet an array of Southern Ocean Medical Center physicians.

The free health screenings include balance, blood pressure, blood sugar, bone densitometry, colorectal cancer, foot screenings, hearing screenings, lipid profile screenings, pulmonary function, pap smears and stroke risk assessment.

A few tests require advanced preparation: participants who wish to have a pap smear are required to register by calling 1-800-560-9990 and the lipid profile screening for cholesterol will take place on Monday, Oct. 21 in the hospital’s Beach Plum Conference Room from 7 to 9 a.m. Participants must fast for 10 hours prior to having blood drawn, with the results available during Women’s Health Night.

The colorectal screening is a free take-home test kit.

The informative evening will also feature four lectures about women’s health. At 4:45 p.m., board-certified urologist Charles Fernicola will discuss urinary control; John Tozzi, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, will speak about women and joint replacement at 5:30 p.m.; at 6:15 p.m., board-certified neurologist Tommasina Papa-Rugino will discuss women and memory; and Tommy Ng, a board-certified cardiologist, will talk about women and heart disease at 7 p.m.

“Last year, nearly 400 women attended Women’s Health Night, which shows how meaningful these health services are to women in the Southern Ocean community,” said Joseph Coyle, SOMC president.

The evening is one of camaraderie, as no woman should have to confront health issues alone. And fun is part of the program, too, with interactive health information displays, light refreshments and giveaways.

Doors open for registration at 4:30 p.m. the day of the event in the center’s main lobby. SOMC is located at 1140 Route 72 West in Manahawkin.
