Writing Workshops with Vivian Grey at LBI Foundation of the Arts and Sciences

Jul 11, 2018

Acclaimed author and children’s book publishing expert Vivian Grey will give three sections of writing workshops at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences, two on Mondays starting July 16 and one on Sundays starting July 15.

The workshops are structured so students can take one, two or all of the workshops, paying $35 a day.

“Jumpstarting Your Creative Writing,” on July 16, 30 and Aug. 13 from 1 to 3 p.m., gives a helpful push to those writing projects you hoped to start, whether a family history, a memoir, an epic novel or a series of short stories, through interactive writing sessions. In them, Grey will teach the craft of writing, character development, plot structure, choice of topics and how to hold a reader’s interest. The class will also explore how to get a manuscript in shape, find an agent, and submit to an editor. Get tips on how to write a query letter, protocols, and finding the right publisher.

On July 23, Aug. 6 and Aug. 20, also from 1 to 3 p.m., Grey focuses on memoir writing in “This is Your Life.”  She’ll help students structure their life story through interactive writing sessions, combining lecture, discussion, writing prompts and ways to create a fiction or nonfiction story using real life experiences as the basis.

On Sundays, July 15, July 29 and Aug. 5, 19 and 26, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Grey will present “Introduction to Children and Young Adult Literature,” workshops designed to offer an overview of the field of writing for a young audience. Grey is the founder of the prestigious Rutgers University Council on Children’s Literature One-on-One Conference, now in its 49th year.

Discover what makes a good story for young readers by exploring publishing trends, the submission process, and character, plot and dialogue development.
